Bachelor's quarters
THE BACHELOR’S QUARTERS was built in the early 1900s by Harry, Manuel and Ernie Fardell for the unmarried sons and daughters of James Lowe and Isabella Fletcher Mitchell. The bedrooms were little used from 1915 to 1952 except to store potatoes, oats and pumpkins. The small room at the northern end of the building was a laundry, housing a copper with a firebox underneath. In addition to a laundry, by placing wet bags over the chimney the room served as a smokehouse, primarily for smoking pigs.
In 1953 Kenneth (Ken) Hunter Moffatt moved into the centre room. In 1959 Ken renovated the cottage by removing the copper and converting the laundry and smoke room into a kitchen with a small wood burning stove. It became the marital home of Ken and Elaine Avon (née Mullins). David Kenneth Hunter Moffatt, Stuart John Hunter Moffatt and Fiona Mary Moffatt also lived in the house with their parents until 1967. The building was restored to its current state by Douglas Hunter Moffatt and D.E. Frazer between 1994 and 2005. |
