The post office
THE POST OFFICE at Invergowrie probably coincided with the Cobb and Co coach run through the property. The post office was registered on the property from about the mid 1870s and the mail route appears on government maps from the period and is noted in Robert Garran’s Picturesque Atlas of Australia of 1886. The Post Office opened in 1881 and closed in 1916. Reference Australian Government, National Archives, record search, SP32/1. There is an Invergowrie Post Office Box file ( Box 338) located in Sydney.
The Post Office was at one stage run by Isabella Fletcher Mitchell (nee Cameron) and a letter claiming additional travel expenses for her was written and supported by her husband James Lowe Mitchell. Such a long way from the homestead to the Bachelor’s Quarters!
